Homemade Cheez Crackers

I don’t think I’m alone in my obsession with Pinterest. Right now we are feverishly working through our “100 Things to Do This Summer” list that we found on Pinterest. We have accomplished 26 items and we only have 14 days left before school starts—yikes! So thanks to Pinterest we try lots of things that look awesome online—we don’t always have the same result. So I found a recipe for Homemade Cheez Crackers and while I almost never buy this as a snack for the boys, I think—if I make them from scratch they will be so much healthier! I found the recipe on Cooking Ala Mel and hers look so tasty. You can print the recipe below.

• 1½ cups cheddar (about 6 oz.)—I used shredded
• 4 T butter
• ¾ cup white whole wheat flour (I only had regular whole wheat flour)
• ¼ t salt
• sea salt, for sprinkling

In a food processor, pulse all of the ingredients together until it forms a ball (about 2 minutes).  She suggested to roll the ball out between two sheets of waxed paper, but then it wouldn’t be as messy—and heaven forbid we don’t make a mess.

Then using a pastry wheel or a small cookie cutter, you cut it into shapes.  We only had a fluted pastry wheel and Zain doesn’t believe in uniformity.

Then you are supposed to place it on a parchment lined baking sheet about ½” apart from each other.

They puff up, so she suggested poking each with a skewer—we used a fork.  They look a bit reminiscent of dog biscuits.  Or dog biscuit crumbs as it were.  Then sprinkle with sea salt if you want them to be a bit saltier.  I used salted butter and between that and the cheese, I don’t think it needed the extra salt when it was all said and done.

Bake at 350ºF for 8-12 minutes.  In that time, our bigger ones got done and the tiny ones got REALLY done!

While they were baking, Zain vacuumed out the couch since they had taken all of the cushions off—pretty sure, just to annoy me.

We cooled ours on a baking rack.  While they don’t look at all as beautiful and uniform as the source recipe, they were darn good and were eaten immediately.  When I told a friend that we made them, she was baffled by the fact that we would work so hard to make something that you could easily buy in the store.  Short of added preservatives, I wouldn’t call these snacks “healthy”.  But it gave the boys something to do and resulted in a fun snack.


Homemade Cheez Crackers

Ingredients

  • 1½ cup cheddar cheese (I used shredded)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ¾ cup white whole wheat flour (I used regular whole wheat flour)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • sea salt (for sprinkling)

Directions

Step 1
In a food processor, pulse all of the ingredients together until it forms a ball (about 2 minutes). Roll the ball out between two sheets of waxed paper.

Then using a pastry wheel or a small cookie cutter, cut into shapes.
Step 2
Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet about ½” from each other.

Poke each cracker with a fork or skewer. Sprinkle with sea salt, if desired.
Step 3
Bake at 350ºF for 8-12 minutes. Allow to cool on a baking rack.
